Welcome to Buenos Aires, Argentina
Part of the Antarctica Expedition included a charter flight from Ushuaia to Buenos Aires, so that’s our next stop. We were to visit Buenos Aires later in our itinerary but we decided to take advantage of the charter flight and go now.
It’s a little over three hours flying time from Ushuaia and the weather looks good. Ushuaia is partly cloudy with temps in the 50’s, while Buenos Aires is sunny with temps in the 80’s. Back to our shorts and tee shirts!
First on our agenda is to Uber to the apartment where we can drop off our bags, then head out for groceries. The apartment we rented is located on one of the main streets in Buenos Aires with lots of restaurants, stores, and a few pubs. The apartment is on the third floor of a 5-story building that looks like it used to be a single, large family home. Now it’s several apartments, quite common here in South America.
Checked in to the apartment and was pleased to see that there was a grocery store right next door. Got the basics that we needed for a few days and called it a day.
Bright and early this morning, had breakfast and started out to find a Fed Ex or DHL shipping location to send some of our winter clothes back to Colorado. The Antarctica Expedition also included a parka and vest that you keep. Unfortunately, there won’t be a need for a parka that is good down to -10F on the rest of our adventure. Need to send some of this stuff back home. It also lightens the load!
Found DHL, boxed up our goods, off to Colorado. Real bargain at $140! If we kept those clothes with us, we would need a third suitcase and have to pay for additional baggage on all the flights. Shipping was cheaper.
Now to explore Buenos Aires. We were on foot so walking around this huge city was a bit limited. We did manage to find a nice restaurant for lunch, then a couple of parks. Biggest thing was when we got back to the apartment, there was a massive demonstration taking place on the street. It was a demonstration for women’s rights and I think every woman in Buenos Aires was there. Quite the display of banners, flags, team shirts and even drum corps marching right past our apartment. The whole thing lasted close to 1.5hrs and filled the street. Personally, I think they all wanted to take Friday off and this was a good reason.
Good for today. Tomorrow we’ll take the Hop-on Hop-off bus around the city. The entire loop takes 3hrs so that gives you an idea how spread out Buenos Aires really is.
