The long and winding road……back home. Lake Arenal
Next morning we’re off for the long drive around Lagos (Lake) Arenal and back to la casa (that’s back to home for those of you who don’t habla the lingo). Lake Arenal is best known to tourists as the wind surfing / kite surfing capital of Costa Rica. From November through April the wind blasts down this 33 square mile, 200 ft deep lake at an average of 20kts. But for most of Costa Rica, Lake Arenal is known for providing hydro-electric power to about 14% of all homes. As for us, it’s a nice paved road (that’s different!) around the lake on our way home. The disappointment came when we realized there is virtually no place to stop for a vista or to take a break and enjoy the lake / volcano view. There are a few hotels and windsurfer schools that have docks or piers but mostly the view of the lake is obscured by trees, bushes and shrubs. We did find a couple of hotels / art shops that had views of the lake so we stopped and took a few pictures. Toad Hall even had Montezuma birds nesting right by the bar!
One final stop on the way home, the little town of Canas (pronounced Can-yas) to see the mosaic church. The church, La Inglesia de Canas, was designed and decorated by the artist Otto Apuy using more than a million pieces of whole and broken ceramic tile. The design depicts both religious and abstract themes.
Also not a bad place to grab some lunch, a little pollo from Polliana, a chicken fast-food chain. Not to be confused with “Gollo” which everyone knows is the international symbol for a small appliance store. Just ask Dave Lennon!
OK, enough cruising, now back to the homestead.
Next adventure: Roaming Our Way to Quepos and Manuel Antonio Reserve.
