The Haga – Old Town Gothenburg
Saturday morning and still a little bit rainy here in Gothenburg. Temperature has cooled down some as well, high of 590 today. This morning was supposed to be laundry day but for some unexplained reason, Gothenburg doesn’t have self-serve laundromats. We knew this apartment didn’t have a washer & dryer so we did most of our laundry before we got here. Guess we’ll just have to resort to the old-fashioned way and wash a few things out in the sink. Good thing we always pack a clothes line and some pins.
Laundry’s drying so off to explore the Haga, or Old Town area. This district was originally built during a housing shortage in the 1800’s but has transformed over the years into a chic little area of shops and cafes. Should be perfect to find those souvenirs and have a pastry and coffee.
Along the way, we stopped at the Feskekorka, or “Fish Church”. Built to resemble a “neogothic church”, it has been home to an indoor fish market since 1874. Not a large market, only 6 different vendors selling seafood, but still fun to walk through and see what the catch-of-the-day is. There is also a restaurant that has, what else, seafood.
Before continuing on, had to get a photo of me and the Misses by the sculpture of men preparing and trading fish. This one’s for you Linda.
Off to Haga. Only about 5 blocks long, the Haga has become ”the” place to stroll, shop for bargains, and take a fika break. We didn’t do a lot of shopping, mostly walking, enjoying the dry weather and watching the people. We did find a nice restaurant that had pastries, so it was break time.
Back on the trail we couldn’t pass up a few personal items to bring back to Fairplay. We’re always on the lookout for Christmas ornaments and something for the grandkids and the Haga was no exception.
Well, that should do it for today. Tomorrow, if the weather cooperates, we’ll take a walk to Gothenburg’s main shopping district to get you guys your souvenirs. I’ll let you know what we find. Cheers.
