Nahuel Huapi National Park
Not a lot on the ole agenda for today. Have a bit of breakfast then a short drive to Nahuel Huapi National Park. The park is about 25 minutes from the cabin so short drive for so great scenery.
Beautiful day for an outing, sunny but a bit cool, around 50F. Weather forecast indicates no rain so really food day for all the hikers and strollers (not the baby type).
A bit about Nahuel Huapi National Park. The park was founded in 1922 as Parque National del Sur. It wasn’t until 1934 that the park was renamed to Nahuel Huapi National Park, with the addition of more land. Today it stands at 720,000 hectares or 1.2 million acres.
The park is located near the border of Argentina and Chile in the Patagonian Andes. Today the park encompasses 2,720 square miles, making it the second largest park in Argentina. The Andes Mountain range serves as the backdrop for this park, with the highest peak being Cerro (hill or mountain) Tronador at 11,453’. Just a bit higher than our driveway in Colorado.
Also included in this park is the lake by the same name, Lago Nahuel Huapi. This lake has a measured maximum depth of 1,394’ and covers 210 square miles!
Summer activities include hiking, kayaking, white water rafting, with snow skiing being the #1 draw in the winter.
