Maid of the Mist
So after a night of gourmet feasting and seeing the lights of the falls, we had to try the ultimate adventure, the Maid of the Mist boat tour of Niagara Falls! OK, not so ultimate but a good boat ride to get as close to the falls as one dares, and a simple way to wash your hair and clothes without getting in the shower.
For a measly $25.25 (American), one can enjoy a mini-sauna, boat ride, reasonable crowd of over-dressed people, and one very slippery deck on your way to the bottom of both the American and Niagara Falls. Yes, the bottom, think about it. The 20-minute ride takes you within 200′ of the rocks at the bottom so yes, it’s up close and personal. It’s also wet. Guess you should expect that from the name.
Well worth the cost and the dampness. They do give you a complimentary plastic poncho to help keep your wallet dry (just in case you want to buy souvenirs), that goes against what your mother told you when you were young, “Never put a plastic bag over your head!”. The real fun comes when people put the bag on 15 minutes from the dock, instant sauna!
So Collette and I and our band of smurf-look-alikes clamor on board and prepare to be cleansed.
Excellent tour, highly recommended. First boat goes out at 9am daily and every 15 minutes thereafter until closing, 7:30pm in the summer. Children under 6 are free but need close supervision, it is slippery.
Avast matey, off to NYC!
