Good Crieff, Charlie Brown
Our first full day in Crieff so we decided to take a stroll and see the town sites. We’re limited in our adventure because we don’t pick up our rental car until tomorrow so we’re footin it. The town was built on several hills and it seems that we need to climb up a hill no matter which way we go.
So, what the hell are we doing in Crieff? Crieff is, and has been throughout history, a crossroads town located between the Highlands and Lowlands of Scotland. It was a convenient point for cattle drovers, and became a major cattle trading center between the 16th and 18th centuries. (Between the 16th and 18th centuries. Wouldn’t that be the 17th century?)
Today, Crieff has become a holiday destination with fine dining replacing the cattle market, and the “hydro” hotel rubbing you the right way before dinner. Most of town is now small “mom & pop” stores selling souvenirs, candies, and Crieffs world famous, “The Famous Grouse” whisky. This whisky is distilled here in what is claimed to be the oldest distillery in Scotland, the Glenturret distillery.
We’re here because the town is perfectly located for us to split our time traveling to the Highlands and Lowlands. Everything else is a plus. Here’s a few pics of the town.
BTW- the church that is right across the street from our house is for sale at the bargain price of ~$180,000.00. Looks pretty cool inside! Hey Skalisky, here’s a great investment opportunity!!!
