Arrival in Bonifacio, Corsica
Back in French territory for a few days. After a short 1hr ferry ride across the Strait of Bonifacio, we headed off to our hotel. That’s right, going to stay in a hotel to give the little woman a break from cooking, so Best Western here we come!
Crazy directions from our good friend Google. First the map app was lost, no clue where we were or where we were going, but soon it caught up. Unfortunately, the traffic leaving the ferry boat didn’t want to wait so we proceeded along with everyone else. That didn’t work. Next thing we knew, we were heading up the mesa to Old Town and narrow, winding, cobblestone streets with lots of pedestrians.
Just when we were in the thick of it, Google woke up and directed us back down to the ferry dock. Nice tour of Old Town, we’ll have to come back and see what’s here once we check in.
I thought the streets in Old Town were narrow, but the street to the Best Western was even smaller, and with lots more people. Seems this street is restaurant row with the restaurants on one side, and the seating area on the water side. There’s a constant stream of waiters / waitresses crossing the road to serve the tourists on the other side. And a steady stream of tourists wandering the wharf totally oblivious that they are in the middle of an active street.
What’s neat is the restaurants here really do it up for Halloween. Entire store fronts are transformed into crypts with Frankenstein statues, monsters, and lots of spiders and bats. Kinda fun to see that even here they have a bit of the spooky spirit.
Finally made it to the Best Western and found an illegal parking spot right out front. So, we parked, checked in and got our included parking pass to one of three free lots. Since we were early, we dropped off the luggage and walked back to restaurant row for some lunch.
Found a nice little place with seating and had a decent meal of salad and pizza. I won’t get into the rude waiter, he was just one of those punks that has a bad day, every day. C’est la vie.
