Day trip to Bluff
As we said earlier, the countryside is a mix of mountains and rolling hills with a few crops, mostly stock feed, and some animals. The countryside reminds us of Northern California, maybe just outside of Redding or closer to the coast. The only difference here is that everything is green, very green and there is a bit of rain.
Our drive today is to the end of the Southern Island, a town called “Bluff”, known locally for their oysters. The amazing thing about this drive was the road. Yes, the roads again! This one was straight! Unbelievable! We actually drove, without switchbacks or curves, for quite a while. Not sure why, there are plenty of hills to go around, some mountains, but the road was straight. Guess all that extra money we spent on a high-performance vehicle (Ma-Tilda, the Kiwimobile) was wasted!
Took us about 2hrs from Te Anau to reach the small town of Bluff. Nice little coastal town with some industry and of course, shipping. Drove to the lighthouse and decided to have one of Collette’s fabulous homemade lunches, sandwich with chips and a drink. One of the ways we try to keep our trips affordable.
Not much going on here, seals and the ocean but still a nice drive and a chance to see some more of the South Island. Heading back to try a little more fishing before our fjord trip. Score: Collette 1, Dan 0.
Cheers
