Pancake Rocks – Sponsored by Denny’s
Not sure how but I forgot one of our stops on the way to Franz Josef, the Pancake Rocks. This geological oddity is just up our alley now that we’ve seen the Giant’s Causeway in Ireland. Strange rock formations have been haunting Collette ever since, but me, I’ve been a rocker for a long time!
A quick detour to the little town of Punakaiki (pronounced,…ah hell, I don’t know) and Dolomite Point. We tramped (like that?) out to see the blowholes and the Pancake rocks. Seems the blowholes had the day off but the rocks were still there. I understand that these formations are caused by extreme pressure on the alternating hard and soft layers of decomposing sea creatures. Well, maybe.
Our brief tour allowed for some artsy photo shots and to have a little lunch while watching the tourists. It’s neat to try and guess where they’re from, Japan, China, Japan, China, Japan, China. What? Australia???
Enough of this foolishness, off to Franz Josef before they close the glacier.
