Research for New Zealand trip

Seems like everyone has a deal when looking for a rental. Homes, apartments, even motorhomes list really good prices. That is until you inquire about renting. Seems motorhomes in New Zealand, probably a great way to see the country, have a really good “deal” for the unsuspecting renter. Several companies quoted me around 5,000 – 6,000NZD for a 25 day rental. After the conversion, $3500-$4500USD, looked like a reasonable option. But once I sent the inquiry off, rates changed, fees changed, things got added and listed as “add on fee”(?????) and the best, Road Recovery Fee. The Road Recovery Fee is charged to diesel vehicles at a rate of 6.80NZD per 100km for some unknown reason, so you need to add a few hundred dollars to your costs depending on how far you plan to drive. Not to mention diesel fuel was reported at 1.83NZD per liter, 3.79 liters per gallon makes diesel fuel ~$7 / gal!
