Pokhara, Nepal
Had an interesting flight from Kathmandu to Pokhara. Arrived at the airport about 2hrs early and was offered a seat on the 1025am flight instead of our 1225pm flight. Why not! Well, that meant that we had to almost run through security, down to gate 2, and get on the bus that takes us to the plane. Not too bad, it was still fairly cool in the morning.
Made the bus in just the nick of time, then off to the plane where we waited on the hot bus for 30 minutes before getting on the plane. Fortunately, we could see our bags sitting by the tail section so we had a pretty good idea they would make it.
The flight is the polar opposite of our Tokyo to Kathmandu flight, 20 minutes air time, not 9hrs 40 mins. Best part, we got above the smog layer and was able to see Mt. Everest! Impressive!
Landed with no problems and good news, our ride was waiting for us. We booked a Jr. Suite, lake view, at Bar Peepal Resort and their driver had come to pick us up. I know, the name is a bit strange, but not if you are Buddhist. Seems that Buddha, the original, had meditated for 7 days under a banyan tree and found enlightenment. The banyan tree became a symbol of fertility, life, and resurrection to those following this religion.
Where does Bar Peepal come in??? Well, a “Bar” banyan tree is the male version, and the “Peepal” banyan tree is he female version hence “fertility”. The tree is associated with Shiva (remember that name from last post?) and is considered to be sacred.
And that is why our resort is named Bar Peepal Resort.
Great room, outstanding service, very reasonable rates for everything from wine to laundry.
But the best is yet to come! Imagine our surprise when we found out there is a Disneyland right here in Pokhara, Nepal!!! A little different from the other “lands” but just as much fun. As one blogger put it, ” Welcome to the sketchiest place on Earth!”
