On to El Calafate, Argentina

May seem a little out-of-order but now we’re heading back down to the Andes and a small town called, “El Calafate”. (Pronounced, L Call a faw tay) This town is home to Glaciers National Park with the Perito Moreno Glacier being the highlight of the 47 glaciers in southern Argentina. This glacier is the third largest source of fresh water on the planet, after Antarctica and Greenland.

As with most other locations, we rented an apartment here for the duration. But we also rented a car. Prior to coming to South America, we read that renting a car was greatly discouraged. Lots of highway bandits, tons of chaotic traffic in cities and rip-off gas stations, so best to take the bus or fly. But here in this small town, we decided to take a chance and rent a car. Besides, now we can go to the glacier without a tour and stay as long as we want. We can also drive around Lago Argentino to El Chalten to see the backside of Torres del Paine, Mount Fitz Roy.

Got to the apartment without much trouble. Unloaded, unpacked and headed back to town (about 5 minutes’ drive) to find some lunch and check out the stores. The apartment is small but just right for 2 people. It has all the basics plus a washer and drying rack for that always needed laundry stop.
