Dining at Ceviche del Rey
Tonight we decided to have dinner in town at a local restaurant called “Ceviche del Rey”. Ceviche del Rey has a pretty good selection of Peruvian dishes that are similar to Costa Rican fare, but a little spicier. The building is arranged for al fresco dining and built in typical Costa Rican style with exposed hardwood beams, tree-trunk supports and tile floors.
Being the only people in the restaurant we had the full attention of our waiter Eliecer Salas, or Elie, who was by far, one of the best waiters we’ve had in a long time! He was pleasant, smiled a lot and described the menu in almost perfect English. As I was looking for steak and Collette seafood, he suggested the special; steak and lobster with a seafood sauce. Perfect.
We’ll start with an appetizer of chips and salsa that is hot enough to remove the skin from your tongue. If you’re not a fan of the hot stuff, there is always tartar sauce, huh?
You know what happens when Collette orders the “seafood special” and this one didn’t disappoint. The sauce had almost every sea creature known to man in it with just a touch of cream. It actually tasted better than it looked but I got to tell you, when in Costa Rica, pass on the steak! Just something about a steak here that doesn’t work.
But wait, there’s more….
Elie said he had prepared a special desert for us (there’s that “special” word again). His creation was a flaming desert with ice cream, caramel, biscuit and apple slices. The problem started with not having liquor with a high enough alcohol content to burn. No worries, just eat it as without a flame! Turned out to be a damn good desert. Thanks Elie.
But wait there’s even more….
Elie asked if we would like an after dinner coffee or a pisco sour. A what? Hell, we’ve had coffee but not a pisco sour. We’ll try one of those!
Made from, yep – pisco, you add a little sugar, cream, egg white and cinnamon. Pretty tasty! Need to be careful, at 40% ABV that’s close to 75 proof!
Of course, while sipping your cool drink, it’s always fun to watch the geckos in the lights.
