Last Dance in Prague
When we last saw our hero, he was fighting through herds of ruffians to get the love of his life to a potato chip booth…
The next morning, we returned to the Christmas Market to Czech out the things you couldn’t see the night before. (Did you catch that) First, start off our market cruise with fresh potato chips and hot spiced wine (not mulled). We had no idea what “Mullet wine” is so we passed on that one. Next, had to try the potato pancake but without the cabbage (sauerkraut). Not impressed.
Enough eating for the moment, on to bigger and better things, Souvenirs!!! Yep, getting everyone something special from Prague so watch those mailboxes. Yeah, right. We’re off to the train station to buy our tickets to Berlin. Tried to do this online and the website wouldn’t let us select seats so off to do it in person. But before we could get there, wouldn’t you know it, another small Christmas Market! And they have fresh caramel donuts for sale!!! Had to, just had to.
On the way back to the apartment, just had to see one more art installation. Artist David Cerny (who else!) created this 42-segment, 45-ton moving head, known as the Statue of Kafka. It is one of the less abstract pieces we have seen by this artist, yet it is special. It is said to represent the tortured life of Franz Kafka who suffered from severe self-doubt. The head stops rotating every hour for 15 minutes then begins the choreographed repositioning of the slices for 45 minutes.
That was the end of the day. In case you haven’t guessed, we’re slow rolling our mornings since we’ve seen all the sites on our “must see” and then some, so the day clicks by pretty quick.
But wait, we’re not through with the Prague Christmas Market just yet. The next morning the official food tasting duo is back in the ring. This time since it’s near lunch, we started with rhubarb crumble that the guy said was strawberry. No big deal, it was actually very tasty and just enough sugar to fuel the next activity, eating. Nothing like an original Prague ham sandwich with potato salad laced with sauerkraut and some mystery pieces we won’t talk about. The ham sandwich was pretty typical of a ham sandwich, no special seasoning or anything, just a BBQ’d ham sandwich. On the other hand, the potato salad was definitely different. I don’t care for sauerkraut, not much anyway, and this was a good combo of both potatoes and kraut which I passed off to Collette. I feel the true measure of something being borderline is if we both don’t care to finish it. We didn’t so it was gone.
Did a bit of strolling around the arena watching the kids and some adults ooh and ahh the Christmas tree before heading back to the apartment. I’m getting a haircut at 2:30 today so we had to cut this one short (no pun intended). Here’s a couple of pics of the seller’s stalls.
Tomorrow, we head off to the land of sausages and beer, Germany. Berlin to be exact. We have an apartment in the Tiergarten district close to a few of the sites we want to see, like the Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie and others. We’re going to take a day off so we can catch up on the blog, post pictures to Shutterfly, giving the legs and bones a rest, and prep for our grand tour on Thursday.
And so, it’s with great sadness we must say auf wiedersehen, bis morgen. (Not a name typo)
