Dances with……….
Perhaps you’ve seen the epic 1990 film that gave Kevin Costner the role of a lifetime, “Dances with Wolves”. This has to be his finest movie ever. Portraying the banished Lt. John W. Dunbar, who is secretly on a suicide mission, he befriends a band of Sioux Indians and also falls madly in love with a wolf, I think its name was Joan or Lisa. Anyway, this film captured 7 Academy Awards, yeah 7, and made Costner a household name.
Fast forward to 2016 and Collette in Costa Rica. After a grueling hot day by the pool reading, Collette decides it time for a shower. Secretly on a health and beauty mission, she retires to the master bath and turns on the shower. Here’s where it gets good….
As the water warms, she prepares for the relaxing spray of Costa Rican waters until she spots something. Something she hasn’t seen before except in books and movies. Could that be, no not here, not on the second floor of this casa. But damn if it isn’t. Yep, a scorpion, about 5 inches long. So here’s where we draw the parallel, Collette was dancing with the scorpion. Ever so quickly and I must say, a little gingerly. Poor little guy must have been scared half to death, what with all the commotion and carrying on. Hell, just a little scorpion. I’m told their sting is similar to a wasp sting and most people don’t die from it. What’s the big deal? Hell, I’m not in that shower!
Got the broom and dust pan, corralled the little fella and out the window he went. Too bad I didn’t see Ramon working on the sprinklers. Of well, I’m sure it didn’t hurt as much as he acted like it did. Some people will do anything to get out of work.
So interesting first day. A couple of iguanas were in the brush next to the pool chasing each other. They were decent size, about 3’ long and just having a ball. Next a large but rather friendly vulture decided to join us at the pool. He was just stopping by for a quick drink and to check the water level. We on the other hand were enjoying our books and wondering if our feet were really that red or if it was some reflection. They were that red, so inside we went and the start of “Dances with Scorpion”.
There you have it, full circle for the first day. I hear in some countries they eat scorpions.
Tomorrow’s adventure, monkey trail and touring the development where we might see howler monkeys and other creatures roaming the jungle. There is a bar and restaurant by the beach so odds are we’ll see some pretty good creatures down there. More to follow…..
